LIGHTING BOOST FOR MORELAND SOCCER CLUBS
Moreland soccer players will soon be able to hone their skills under brighter lights thanks to a $100,000 Brumby Labor Government funding boost towards the upgrade and installation of competition lighting at Reddish Reserve in Hadfield, Sports Minister James Merlino said today.
Joining Member for Pascoe Vale Christine Campbell at the ground today, Mr Merlino said the Moreland Wolves Soccer Club would be the big winners in the project, which has been funded through the Strengthening the World Game program.
“Grassroots clubs are at the heart of our communities and by improving their facilities, we’re encouraging even more people to get active and involved in sports like soccer,” Mr Merlino said.
“With the recent success of the Matildas in the Asian Cup and the growing excitement surrounding the Socceroos at the World Cup, soccer is experiencing unprecedented growth in Victoria, especially in Coburg.
“With so many locals wanting to get involved, it’s important we provide facilities that allow more people to play, day and night.
“Once up and running, the new lights will allow the Wolves to use their entire ground for training; hopefully we’ll see a boost in memberships, home club support and local participation.”
Ms Campbell said the project includes the replacement of old training lights at the facility’s main competition pitch with lighting that meets Australian standards for both training and competition.
New lights will also be installed on the junior sized soccer pitches at the Reserve.
“This is a boost for the juniors, who will soon have their own place to train under lights and develop their skills in the hope of emulating the Socceroos and Matildas,” Ms Campbell said.
“The Strengthening the World Game program is helping local clubs and councils meet the growing demand for soccer and improving playing conditions for both seniors and juniors.
“We’re providing quality facilities for all Victorians to enjoy, and offering more opportunities for everyone to get active and involved in their local community.”
Ms Campbell commended Moreland City Council for matching the Victorian Government’s $100,000 contribution as well as the Moreland Wolves Soccer club for their $10,000 contribution.
“Working together we can ensure local grounds can continue to be a focal point not just for the development of grassroots sport, but also provide a opportunities for the whole community.”
