TRAFFIC FLOW TO BE IMPROVED ON BELL STREET
Works have started to improve the Bell Street and Sussex Street intersection in Coburg, Christine Campbell MP, Member for Pascoe Vale, announced today.
“The Brumby Government is taking action to improve Victoria’s road network and this upgrade will provide important safety benefits for our local community,” Ms Campbell said.
The $575,000 works include installing a left turn slip lane from Bell Street onto Sussex Street.
“Around 300 cars turn left into Sussex Street during peak hour, which can lead to a build-up of cars up to 260 metres long on Bell Street. The slip lane will help to reduce this build-up.”
“At times, buses take up two lanes to turn left onto Sussex Street. This affects other drivers and can be particularly dangerous. The works will eliminate this, improving the safety of the intersection.”
“This project will assist with traffic flow by giving drivers clearly defined turning lanes which will help to achieve a smoother continuous traffic flow along Bell Street.” Ms Campbell said.
The works are expected to be completed in late May 2009
