CROSS PARTY SUPPORT FOR ABORTION BILL CHANGES
Pascoe Vale MP Christine Campbell said alarm bells were starting to ring with more State MPs over the lack of both safeguards and support provisions in the Government’s Abortion Bill.
An urgent meeting of MPs called by Ms Campbell on Wednesday night to thrash out amendments to the legislation attracted cross-party support.
“It was agreed that at least 22 amendments would be needed if women were to receive proper support,” Ms Campbell said.
“All agreed that a mandatory provision of independent counselling for a woman considering an abortion was essential.”
Ms Campbell said the MPs had also been critical of the lack of detail in the 10-page Abortion Reform Bill.
“I am particularly concerned about the provisions for abortions that occur post 24 week,” Ms Campbell said.
“The Act needs to reinforce current procedures in public hospitals for post 24 week abortions where a panel of specialists would be called in assist the woman.
“I am also concerned that health workers may be forced to assist in procedures against their wishes.”
Ms Campbell said MPs at Wednesday night’s meeting wanted to see the Act provide for:
• A mandatory provision of independent counselling
• A panel of experts to assess post 24 week terminations
• No disadvantage to conscientious objectors
• Clearer emergency role for doctors and other specialists
